Our goal is to place every player at the right level to support their development and enjoyment of the game.
Tryout Dates
- Tryouts begin the Tuesday after Labour Day.
- Please keep your schedule flexible as exact times will be confirmed closer to the date
- 8U tryouts may start earlier, in late August
- Initial schedules will be posted on the website once confirmed
- Dates may change based on field and coach availability
Overview
Our goal is to place each player at the appropriate level to support their development and enjoyment of the game.
- All players attend initial tryouts
- Players are evaluated over multiple sessions
- Teams are formed progressively (Team 1, Team 2, Team 3, Dedicated Select)
- Coaches and the Rep Committee finalize all rosters
Step-by-Step Tryout Process
Step 1: Initial Tryouts
All registered players attend the first tryout sessions.
- Players may be split into groups depending on numbers
- Evaluations focus on overall skill, effort, and game awareness
Strike Zone Training Support
BOMBA uses Strike Zone Training instructors to help with tryouts and team selection for 8U.
For age groups where additional teams are added, such as 9U and 10U, Strike Zone may also assist with tryouts. In those cases, they work alongside the named coaches for that age group to help evaluate players and support selection for the new teams.
Step 2: Player Movement
As evaluations progress, players are placed into appropriate groups. Families will be notified if their player:
- Continues in Team 1 evaluations
- Moves to Team 2 / Team 3 / Dedicated Select evaluations
- Is no longer moving forward
Step 3: Team 1 Selection
- The head coach evaluates players during final sessions
- A proposed roster is submitted to the Rep Committee
- The committee reviews and approves selections
- Parents/Guardians are contacted once the team is finalized
Step 4: Remaining Teams (Team 2, Team 3, Dedicated Select)
- The same evaluation process continues for all remaining players
- Teams are formed based on skill level and development fit
- All rosters are approved by the Rep Committee
Important Information
- Players are evaluated across multiple sessions, not a single tryout
- Not making Team 1 does not mean your player stops attending tryouts
- Many players continue through Team 2, Team 3, or Dedicated Select teams
- All families will receive communication throughout the process
How Coaches Are Selected
- Head coach applications open in early July and close in mid-August
- Interviews take place in August
- Coaching selections are announced over Labour Day weekend
- All applications are reviewed confidentially by the Rep Committee
- Committee members are not involved in decisions for their own child’s age group
Coach Requirements
To be considered, head coaches must:
- Be available for tryouts in September
- Be available for indoor training from early January to late April
- Have a valid Vulnerable Sector police check (less than 2 years old as of January)
- Complete all required NCCP certifications through Baseball Ontario
Note: Assistant coach applications are not accepted. Assistant coaches are selected after teams are finalized.
